Q. What’s the best way for me to part my hair when starting dreads?

A. OK, here’s what you do:

In my experience I’ve found that doing dreads with a definite part down the middle is not a cool idea, unless you dig a blinding white part on top of your head for a few years.

Best thing to do is to grab random, alternating chunks of hair from either side of your natural part.

And be sure that you don’t make the chunks too big, cuz 1) they puff up a lot and 2) the fatter they are, the longer they take to actually become dreads. They WILL GET FATTER as the months go by, promise.

  1. Dreadheadhq.com has the best material, it’ll give the best advice, it has videos and examples, and lots of pix (to settle your parts dilema). Good luck!

  2. The majority of people I’ve seen with dreadlocks, including myself, have a part right down the middle. It looks absolutely no different than a person with straight hair parted down the middle. This “blinding white part” you talk about isn’t very noticeable at all. It’s the same as if you parted it when your hair is not dreaded. It looks fine parted down the middle or randomly placed, it’s all a matter of preference. But calling it “blinding” is a huge exaggeration.
