Hey kids.

Unfortunately, our last forum sucked. The service we chose to use was terrible. This new forum is friggin fantastic, but we were not able to move over any of the old posts and comments. So we will have to start over!

  1. so i just put my dreads in on Saturday and im African American and Portuguese i have very curly hair but before that i had about a 5 to 6 inch fro. I was wondering because i twisted my dreads and used bee’s wax and i took one out of the twist’s to see if they’d lay flat and they didn’t so do i use conventional hair straighteners i.e. flat irons or what? how will i get my dreads to lay flat. any help would be greatly appreciated.

  5. I put twist dreds in my hair yesterday. Because I have short natural curly weird hair the back came out beautiful. I do believe that it will loc soon. The front however is another story. It looks like I have weird fish hooks hanging out on the end or something. I was just wondering how others do it.

Did you go to a loctician (is that a word)? Beauty Parlor? Did your own? If you did your own how did the parts work out for you? My parts look horrible.

Hit a sistah back. Today is day two. I figured if I don’t like the way that I started the locs by the 5th of June then I will go get someone to do it. I just wanted to do it myself its a pride thing ya know?

  11. Hi,
I’m considering getting dreadlocks. I have a few questions:
My hair type is in between wavy and curly, really thick, and down to my waist. How hard will it be to start and maintain my dreads with my hair type?
How long will it take before they ‘look nice’?
And how exactly am I supposed to wash them?

I guess just tell me anything that’s good to know about dreads.
    = ) Thanks

  12. I’m in Australia and have had dreads for a few years… they were getting a bit rough looking and i’ve spent ages trying to find a good wax, finally found a place in Oz that sells a pretty full range of dread stuff – http://www.dreadlocks.com.au. They helped with info about how to lock up the new growth too.

  14. hey nice website. Im an Asian male who’s thinking about getting THE DREADLOCK and I’ve acctually never seen any other Asian male with the dreads before. So I have lots and lots of questions. Am I going to be able to grow one? Am I going to be able to pull it off and still look good? I actually have that thick, straight Asian hair and I want to know how long it will take me to grow a decent length dreads. My hair does grow pretty fast and I am dedicated to start the journey to get the dreads. so please reply me back ASAP with lots and lots of answers for me :)

  22. my friend told me she could dread hair.. i gave her the benefit of the doubt and let her dread my hair… it looks like crap.. i have huge scalp lines, they are no where even close to even, and most of them dont even look like dreads.. i want to take them out and just go to a salon.. but its waay to expensive and im sure she would be mad because all the effort and time she put into them. is there any way i can fix them..?

  23. I just started the locking process but I think my locks are too big, they are about an inch in width and I only have 90 locks and the back ones appear bigger that the front. Can I just split them in two or just let them be?

  29. I used to have the same problem. The poofing up and the sticking out thing. It takes time, your dreads need to “gain weight” then they will start to lay flat. I read that you are twisting them, you should use a crochet hook or your hands if you have small finger, to interlock them from the roots. You will get tighter dreads and they will be less frizzy after washing.

Im Canadian but my mother was born in Jamaica and my father in Portugal. so i imagine my hair resembles yours.

The beginning was the hardest. i started with a 5 or 6 in fro then worked on it for the past 3 years. The first year was the hardest because i was only twisting, and using a straightening iron to flatten my dreads. i learned the interlock thing around 10 inches and now my hair is so easy to up keep, i dont even need a straightener anymore!

I fully recommend interlocking. However take special care not to over tighten the hair on and around your temples. The scalp there is sensitive and the hair can fall out easily if pulled too tight.

when you wash your hair try to use a shampoo that reduces build up. that way your dreads will get a thorough cleaning, when theyre the cleanest they tend to tighten better i find.

Hope i was helpful. If you really want dreads push through this tough time, it gets easier…

    Good luck!!

  30. you should try to cut back on how often you wash your dreads. If you buy a shampoo that reduces build up and calms itchiness your dreads probably wont itch too much. Also some conditioners leave stuff behind that can leave a film on your scalp that later drys it out causing dryness and itchiness, or even oily scalps. just something to think about.
