Q. I don’t want big dreads that every body will notice – I want short ones like a little below my ear lobes – but my concern is school and the public. I’m only 12 and a half. By the time my hair’s all at the right length and its all dreaded, I’ll be 13, so is it alright to have them at a young age? And also I’ll be a WHITE dreaded 13 year old. Does that sound ok?

A. No, I don’t think you are too young to have dreads, and who cares if you are white! Dreads are for anyone who thinks they’d like to have them. Now, they do take a lot of maintenance in the beginning, and can be quite a pain sometimes but if you are patient and don’t care when your friends tease you about having a rat nest on your head, then with time they will look awesome.
You can always wear a hat or rasta tam. Before you decide to go for it, though, you have to make sure it’s ok with your parents! And you can always just try it out for a day or two with gel to see if you like how they look, and if not, it’s not too hard to comb and wash them out again.

  3. im not exactley sure who will read or recive this comment, but im only 13 and i wanna get dreads a.s.a.p. Only problem is,is that my school can be pretty cruel sometimes, and i have a few people who hate me. Should i try an make friends with them first? Or should i just ignore them?I Know a friend of mine got them, and he only got pressured for one day about them.

  10. To the last poster, If you want dreads….get em. Not washing dreads is just wrong. I have washed mine every 4 days since I got them. If anything washing them makes them dread faster because it washes out the oil in your hair….just make sure you use an all natural – residue free shampoo. Using a normal shampoo will lead to dread-rot. They will look like shit when you first put em in….and will for a while. I’ve had my dreads for about a month now. They’re no Bob Marley dreads, but they do look a lot better than they did the first week. Be prepared to get ragged on by your friends, family, strangers…etc. Easiest way to deal with that is to admit your hair looks like shit and joke about it with em….they’ll look better with time. White girls with dreads are hot as hell too so keep that in mind lol. I’d say get the dreads if you can convince your mom to. Starting dreads at 12 would be perfect. You’ll have really nice dreads by the time you hit high school. Plus when your young is the time to experiment with things like that. Having dreads can make finding a decent job difficult due to the common misconception that dreads are dirty.

Anyways, if you want dreads….get em. You can also put rubberbands around the roots and tips (the ones made for hair) which will make them look a lot better during the earlier stages….just stay away from wax. Always…..ALWAYS have rubber bands on the roots and tips of your dreads when you wash em. Keeps them from falling out when they get wet. On days you shower but don’t wash your dreads….put em up or cover em with a shower cap or something so they dont get wet. Atleast in their younger stages anyway. Most nights I rubberband the roots before bed….keeps the stray hairs with the right dreads so theyre easier to maintain in the morning.

Well much love and best of luck with your dread-venture.
